A lock rarely fails without warning. Why is my door lock sticking?
The first job is to notice exactly when it sticks. Does the key resist as it goes into the lock? Does it turn only when the door is open? Is the handle stiff before you lift it, or does the key refuse to complete its turn after the handle is raised? Each symptom narrows down the likely cause.
On timber doors with a mortice lock or night latch, the problem is often with the latch, bolt, keep or cylinder. On uPVC and composite doors, a sticking lock is frequently related to the multipoint locking mechanism or the door dropping slightly out of alignment. Aluminium shopfront doors can also develop alignment issues through regular heavy use.
The door and frame are out of alignment
A door naturally moves over time. Changes in temperature and moisture can make timber expand, while hinges on any door can wear or loosen. With uPVC and composite doors, everyday use and the weight of the glazed panel can cause the door to drop by a few millimetres.
That small movement can stop the locking points or bolt from entering the keeps in the frame cleanly. You may find that the lock works perfectly with the door open but sticks once it is shut. You may also need to lift, push or pull the door to turn the key.
Do not make this a habit. Needing to force the door into position puts extra strain on the cylinder and internal gearbox. A locksmith can assess the hinges, keeps and mechanism, then adjust the door correctly where appropriate. This is especially worthwhile before the mechanism becomes jammed in the locked position.
Dirt or dry components are affecting the cylinder
A lock cylinder is exposed to dust, moisture and general grime, particularly on external doors. Over time, debris can interfere with the internal pins, making the key feel rough on entry or difficult to turn.
Use a lock-specific dry lubricant, such as a graphite or PTFE product designed for cylinders, applied sparingly. Insert and remove the key a few times, then turn it gently. If the key will not enter fully, do not push it hard. Check for visible debris around the entrance, but leave anything lodged inside to a professional. Probing the cylinder with improvised tools can damage the pins.
The key is worn, bent or damaged
A key that has worn down over years of use may still operate the lock intermittently, but it will not lift the internal pins accurately every time. A slightly bent key can cause similar trouble and may snap if it is twisted against resistance.
Try a spare key if you have one. If the spare works smoothly, stop using the worn key. If both keys stick in the same way, the problem is more likely to be within the cylinder, door alignment or locking mechanism.
Never continue using a key that is visibly bent, cracked or difficult to withdraw. The inconvenience of a sticking lock is far easier to deal with than a broken key trapped in the door.
A uPVC or composite door mechanism is under strain
Most modern uPVC and composite doors use a multipoint locking system. When you lift the handle, hooks, rollers, bolts and sometimes shootbolts engage around the frame. The cylinder then secures the mechanism.
If lifting the handle has become difficult, the issue may be alignment rather than the cylinder itself. If the handle lifts normally but the key will not turn, the cylinder or gearbox may be at fault.
